Choosing a Fan for an Exposed Position
Four things separate a fan that survives outdoors from one that doesn't.
IP rating
The rating tells you what exposure the fan is built to handle, from fully covered through to direct weather. Fitting an indoor-rated fan outdoors voids the warranty and shortens its life considerably.
Blade material
ABS and moulded polymer blades resist moisture and won't warp, unlike timber blades in a damp position. Metal blades need appropriate coating to avoid corrosion.
Motor sealing
Sealed motors keep moisture and salt out of the windings and bearings. It's the single biggest factor in how long an outdoor fan lasts.
Mounting and clearance
Outdoor fans still need fixing into structure, with adequate clearance from walls, railings and the floor. We check the framing before quoting.
Wiring in an Exposed Location
The fan is only half the job. Any wiring in an outdoor or semi-exposed position needs weather-appropriate enclosures, correctly sealed entries and protection on the circuit feeding it.

- Moisture and airborne salt attack the bearings, motor windings and blade finishes far more aggressively outdoors. Fans built for indoor use have no sealing to resist that.
