Working Through a Renovation
Renovation work runs in stages, and the timing of each one matters.
Planning and layout
Outlet, switch and light positions are set before any cable is run. Changing your mind at this stage costs nothing.
Rough-in
Cabling is run through open framing and left ready for fit-off. This has to happen before insulation and lining, so it gets booked around the builder's programme.
Fit-off
Outlets, switches, fittings and fans are installed once the surfaces are finished. Circuits are tested and energised at this point.
Certification
The completed work is tested and certified. You receive documentation covering the new circuits, which matters for the build file and for any future sale.
New Work Meeting Old Wiring
Renovations frequently expose what's behind the rest of the house. New circuits have to meet current standards, and the point where they connect back into an older installation is where problems surface.
A board with no spare capacity, cabling that's undersized for what's being added or protection that doesn't extend to the existing circuits all need resolving as part of the job rather than after it. It's better to find that at planning stage than when the fit-off is booked.
