Fuse Board Replacements in Broadbeach

Ceramic fuses were a sound design for the loads houses carried when they were installed. The problem is that a fuse wire only protects the cable. It does nothing at all to protect the person holding the appliance when a fault develops.

Safe Haven Electrical QLD carry out switchboard upgrades, and converting old fuse boards to modern combined protection is the bulk of that work. Each circuit gets its own RCBO, which handles both overload and earth leakage on that circuit alone. When something faults, one circuit drops out rather than the whole house going dark at the fuse box.

What Changes When the Board Is Replaced

An upgrade changes how the house behaves when something goes wrong.

  • Protection per circuit

Each circuit is individually protected instead of sharing a single fuse or breaker. Faults are isolated to one part of the house.

  • No more fuse wire

Rewireable fuses depend on someone fitting the correct wire gauge, and the wrong gauge defeats the protection entirely. A breaker removes that variable.

  • Faster reset

Restoring power means flicking a switch rather than finding a torch, a fuse holder and the right wire. That matters at night with a fridge full of food.

  • Documented and certified

The board is tested and you receive a certificate of electrical safety. It's useful paperwork to have on file for insurance and for sale.

Reading What's Already in the Board

Before quoting, we take the cover off and look at what's actually there. Not every old board needs the same treatment, and the difference matters to the price.

Some boards are structurally sound with adequate space and a serviceable main switch, and only the protective devices need changing. Others are undersized, heat-damaged or so full that nothing new fits without a bigger enclosure. Occasionally the internals are the problem rather than the box, and general electrical repair work resolves it without a full replacement.

We'll tell you which of those you're looking at, and why, before you commit to anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an RCBO and how does it differ from a circuit breaker?
An RCBO combines a circuit breaker and a safety switch in one device, protecting both the wiring and the people using it. A standard circuit breaker only protects against overload and short circuits.
Do ceramic fuses still meet electrical standards?
An existing rewireable fuse board isn't automatically illegal, but new and altered circuits must meet current standards, which effectively requires modern protection. Any board without safety switch protection is worth reviewing regardless.
How much space does a modern switchboard need?
Modern boards need more room because each circuit has its own protective device rather than sharing one. Enclosures are typically larger than the fuse boxes they replace, so mounting position gets considered as part of the quote.
