What a New Fan Point Involves
Four steps stand between a bare ceiling and a working fan.
Cable run
A cable is run from an appropriate circuit or the board through the roof space to the fan position. Accessible roof space makes this straightforward; a flat or cathedral ceiling doesn't.
Mounting to structure
A rated mounting block is fixed directly to the joists. Plasterboard anchors won't hold a fan's weight and vibration over time.
Switching
Fan speed and light usually need separate control, which means either extra cores to the wall switch or a remote receiver at the fan. We'll set up whichever suits the room.
Balance and commissioning
The fan is balanced, the direction checked and the controls tested before we finish. A fan that wobbles from day one only gets worse.
Ceilings That Make It Harder
Not every ceiling gives easy access. Flat concrete ceilings, raked or cathedral ceilings and second-storey rooms with no crawl space all limit where a cable can be run and how a fan can be mounted.
There's usually a way through, but it changes the approach. That might mean surface-mounted conduit in a discreet run, a remote receiver instead of extra switch cores or an extension rod to bring a fan down to a workable height from a high raked ceiling.
