Choosing Between the Two
Both options are compliant, and each has a situation it suits better.
Hardwired with battery backup
Mains-powered alarms with a backup battery are the most reliable long-term option. They need cable to each alarm position, which suits accessible roof spaces.
Sealed 10-year lithium
The battery is built in and lasts the alarm's service life, with no replacement needed. These suit positions where cable can't reasonably be run.
Mixing the two
A home can use hardwired alarms where cable is accessible and lithium units elsewhere, provided they all interconnect. This is often the practical answer in older houses.
Replacement at end of life
Both types are replaced around the 10-year mark, when the sensor has degraded. The manufacture date on the housing is the reference, not the install date.
